Inner Visions

Reading Pictures

Reading pictures begins with description. Naming all that can be observed in a photograph is the beginning for revealing its story. In these first three pictures, naming the components in them leads to revelation of their commonalities and idiosyncrasies. Naming the elements in a photograph helps the viewer discover themes that emerge from the work in response to careful examination. As is the case with all works by skillful photographers, those themes speak to attitudes and emotions emanating from the maker, both at the time of the taking and later during the making of the final image. In Lester Davidson’s images, we encounter multiple themes; reverence and feelings of spiritual awe for nature, appreciation of aesthetic symmetry and moods of calmness, repose, and erotic romanticism. Those thematic threads, and others, meander through all the photographs that follow.
